As you are entering the wild & remote areas, communications whilst on safari will be limited to emergencies only. While on transfers between camps you might be able to, with your relatives depending on the communications available.
Phone & Internet in the region
When in transit, to lodges or hotels, you should be able to call home if you have roaming or from the hotel where you are staying- though the phone network in Zimbabwe is still poor and congested, making it sometimes impossible to call some international destinations. There are no telephones or Internet facilities at our safari camps.
Be aware that international calls from hotels can be really expensive.
Cellular networks may allow international roaming with your operator – please check with them before you depart – ensure you check what the rates of the calls and sms’s will be when on roaming.
In Johannesburg, you can buy a local sim card to call home however this will not be on roaming.
Internet is still scarce in the region, but you can find Internet cafes in major cities and in transit hotels but not at safari camps.
Switching off phones in the bush
An increasing number of guests are bringing satellite phones on safari. If possible, please don’t. As most people come on safari to get away from the outside world, we feel that we must set some limitations to their use.
-
Phones are not to be used in any of the common areas or on the vehicle or on game drives.
-
Phones may not be used for incoming calls as the ringing may disturb other guests and most importantly the wildlife.
-
They may only be used in the privacy of your tent, but only to retrieve messages and to dial out.
-
Otherwise, phones should be switched off at all times.
Our camps are equipped to communicate via radio, sat or other means, for logistic and safety purposes only.
